Machines are complex. Malfunctions can cause serious accidents. Machine builders are well advised to observe the requirements of the Machinery Directive. In particular, whenever software and electronic components take on safety tasks that are intended to protect the operating personnel of the machine from injury or even death.

In order to increase the reliability of controls, their software and the associated safety-related components, DIN EN ISO 13849 was created. DIN EN ISO 13849 is listed as a safety standard in the Official Journal of the EU and is therefore mandatory to comply with the Machinery Directive.

SISTEMA calculates the reliability of safety-related controls in accordance with the requirements of DIN EN ISO 13849. First, the “required performance level (PLr)” is determined. SISTEMA then checks all safety-related sub-areas of the control concept using circuit diagram information. SISTEMA reproduces the structure of these sub-areas and calculates the reliability values. At the end, SISTEMA outputs the performance level (PL) actually achieved as a report.

The ergo-safe team is very familiar with the risk parameters for determining the required performance level (PLr). Ergo-safe knows effective measures against "Common Cause Failures" (CCF) and knows how to determine the mean component quality (MTTFd) and the mean test quality (DCavg) of components.
